Los Angeles Galaxy
- Los Angeles Galaxy host New York City FC in the opening round of the 2026 Major League Soccer season and there will be plenty to celebrate on Monday night.
- The Galaxy have a new statue of Cobi Jones being unveiled before the game and it’s also their home opener.
- LA Galaxy play a possession-based but direct style of play.
- They typically set up in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, but with the signings of Reus and Pec, the 4-2-3-1 looks more likely.
- Los Angeles Galaxy won their final game of the season 2-1 away to Minnesota United, but the rest of 2025 was disappointing for the 2024 MLS Cup champions, who finished near the bottom of the West with little in the way of team chemistry.
New York City FC
- New York City FC finished fifth in the Eastern Conference with 56 points in 2025 and made a deep playoff run before falling to Inter Miami.
- NYCFC are a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 team too, but with a much more structured, patient approach to the game.
- They are more likely to overload the wide areas and create overlaps rather than focus on a single focal point, but will look to create chances via passing.
- NYCFC showed their defensive prowess in the latter part of 2025, clinching a playoff series against Charlotte FC before taking out Philadelphia in the second round.
Head-to-Head
LA Galaxy won the last meeting between the teams 2-0 in June 2024.
Key Players
- Both teams will be without their creative engines, with Riqui Puig a major absence for the hosts and Alonso Martínez a big miss for the visitors, so we should see a tactical game where the leaders have to adapt.
-
Potential difference-makers:
- With Martínez out, Nicolás Fernández Mercau will need to step up in attack for NYCFC, while Thiago Martins can keep things solid at the back.
- LA’s big signing, Gabriel Pec, will be the focal point of their attacking play and he’s a straight-line, direct runner known for his consistent end product.
- Maxi Moralez is a classy veteran that will add craft and composure to the centre of the field for NYCFC and Reus will do the same for the Galaxy, adding vision and creativity.
- They were outclassed by Inter Miami in the Eastern Conference Final though, so it’s no surprise that they have kept Matt Freese at the back as he is a strong shot-stopper and a club leader.
Betting Insights
- The matchup of these two big city clubs will be a good one and the bookies have a hard time deciding which way to go in the match result markets, with Los Angeles the slight favorites at 2.46, NYCFC on the other side at 2.6 and the draw at a tempting 3.55.
- The bookies think it’s a goal fest though, with ‘Over 2.5 goals’ at 1.7.
Prediction
With the sun out and temperatures mild in Carson, we think this should be an open, flowing game to kick off the MLS season and the ‘Over 2.5 goals’ market at 1.7 looks attractive.
