Kashima Antlers
- Kashima began this special tournament with three consecutive wins before coming from two goals down to beat Urawa Reds in their last game.
- Kashima began with three straight wins and are now on top of J1 EAST group with 10 points from four games, edging Verdy in third on eight points.
- Kashima are very vertical and like to get at opponents with high pressing, although they are disciplined and know when to press and when to drop back and control.
Tokyo Verdy
- Tokyo Verdy won at Kashiwa and beat Mito Hollyhock 3-1 at home in this tournament, but lost a close game 3-2 at Yokohama Marinos.
- Verdy, meanwhile, are right on the leaders’ tails and have shown they can dig out wins when needed and beat the Antlers.
- Verdy are a double pivot team that likes to control possession and build their attacks from the back, with a compact mid-block and creative midfielders to unlock defences.
Head-to-Head
- Kashima Antlers have won three of the last five official J1 meetings with Verdy, including a 1-0 away win in November 2025 and 4-0 home win in February 2025.
- They won 2-1 at home to Antlers in August 2024 and forced a 3-3 draw in May 2024, so they can certainly make life tough for their hosts.
Key Players
- Kashima Antlers
- Kashima coach Toru Oniki has been very impressive with the way his team have been drilled in the last two wins at home to Kashiwa Reysol and Yokohama F. Marinos, where they kept clean sheets.
- In their recent comeback at Urawa, Yuma Suzuki’s experience and transitional play was key, while the sub Aleksandar Čavrić is a threat on set-piece plays and scored the dramatic equaliser against the Reds.
- Čavrić’s speed and strength make him a big threat on corner kicks and free kicks and we’ve already mentioned his late goal off the bench at Urawa.
- L. Ceará is the focal point of Antlers’ attack and has two goals in the tournament - one in the home opener and one that set them on the comeback trail at Urawa.
- Naomichi Ueda is the defensive hub that holds the team together and Tomoki Hayakawa has been in good form in goal, but the Antlers have been keeping clean sheets at home with a lot of defensive solidity that we’re going to assume remains intact on Saturday.
- Tokyo Verdy
- Verdy have a different kind of set-piece threat in I. Someno and Yukio Matsuhashi, who have combined for goals in multiple matches and driven the team's counterattacking transitions.
- Kosuke Morita and Ryo Hirakawa also provide creativity from the right and central areas, where Verdy like to play their football.
- Tokyo have a goalkeeper who looks at ease in his role - Matheus has been very good in the early part of the season with strong shot-stopping and command of his area.
Betting Insights
Backing both teams not to score at 1.65 looks a very interesting alternative to the main market because of the way these two play and the likelihood of a close, competitive game.
Prediction
However, we are going to take the slight favourite Antlers to win because of home advantage, their recent form, set-piece prowess and because they have a narrow edge over Verdy in the recent encounters.
