PSV Eindhoven
- This UEFA Champions League 2025-2026 league-phase game is a high-stakes encounter with Bayern Munich already among the top eight and close to securing a top seed in the standings and PSV Eindhoven needing a result to avoid falling out of the playoff contention.
- Peter Bosz has turned PSV into a very successful team in the Eredivisie, leading them to the top of the table with around 52 points from 19 matches.
- They won 2-1 against Fortuna Sittard on Sunday, with goals by Ivan Perišić and Paul Wanner late on to keep Eindhoven in first place.
- And with Bayern coming to town, PSV will need to be near their best, although with the loss of in-form striker Ricardo Pepi to a broken forearm, they are going to be missing a key player in a big game.
- The tactical clash here will be between PSV’s high-tempo, high-press game and Bayern’s patient, possession-based approach.
- PSV play with very narrow possession shapes and their high-pressure style is built on the fast transitions that they create from this approach.
- However, they have found it more difficult to transfer that success onto the European stage, where opponents are often more patient and can exploit the space behind their advanced full-backs when they press high up the field.
Bayern Munich
- Bayern Munich have been even more impressive than PSV in their own domestic league, sitting at the Bundesliga summit with around 50 points from 19 games.
- They have also beaten Union Saint-Gilloise 2-0 in the Champions League this term, so they won’t be taking PSV lightly.
- Vincent Kompany’s approach is similar to Bosz’s in that they look to dominate possession and press in waves, but Bayern are also very good at playing calm soccer and are very clinical when they get into the right spaces that PSV’s advanced defensive line will allow.
- They have a fluid system where the 4-2-3-1 can become a 4-3-3 and vice versa, depending on where the ball is.
Head-to-Head
Bayern have dominated PSV Eindhoven in six of the eight competitive meetings to date, including home and away in 2016-17 in the UCL group stage.
Key Players
- With Jamal Musiala, who is gradually returning to fitness, and the driving force of Joshua Kimmich when he is fit, Bayern have a great mix of young talent and experience in midfield.
- Michael Olise and Luis Díaz provide creativity and width, but Olise is particularly dangerous from the wing.
- New keeper Matěj Kovář has impressed in his debut season, both in the box and when distributing the ball.
- Wanner is a young, exciting attacking midfielder signed from Bayern’s own system.
- But it is Perišić who is the big-game star for PSV, having scored a matchwinner against Fortuna Sittard and often providing an aerial threat on set pieces, and he could be the main danger for Bayern on Wednesday.
Betting Insights
- Bayern are strong favorites at 1.6, but PSV are longshots at 4.55 and a draw is 4.45.
- The bookmakers are right to make Over 2.5 goals the standout bet at 1.33.
- Bayern should create more chances and have Kane, who has seven Champions League goals this term, as talisman up front.
Prediction
So a narrow Bayern win is my main selection here, with 2-1 and 2-0 my preferred scorelines, but PSV have been very good at home in the league and a cold and wet night in Eindhoven could suit their physical play and make the game more stop-start, so they can make it a close game if their pressing disrupts Bayern’s rhythm enough.
